Nurse Delegation
Some states provide for “med-techs” in the Nurse
Practice Act. ALAA has not supported med-tech methodology for medicine delivery
in Assisted Living.
“Nurse Delegation” for Specialty Care Assisted Living is a method
the Association has endorsed. A special task force of Registered Nurses working
in Assisted Living has been working for several months on this issue.
As of December 2003, ALAA will offer the Alabama Board of Nursing a proposal for “nurse delegation” which will be modeled from existing delegation language in the Alabama Nurse Practice Act.
The basic premise will allow for a licensed nurse to delegate the “med-pass” to a non-licensed resident care attendant who has completed a course of study certifying competency in this activity.
A registered nurse will train the employee in a restricted and limited program certified by the Nursing Board and the attending RN.
This plan is adapted from the Alabama procedure for school nurses and nurses in the Alabama State Independent Living program (SAIL).
The Nursing Board will review and hopefully adopt the plan in early
2004.
For more information and detailed language of the proposal, contact the
ALAA offices.
